Toyama Prefecture also known as Tomiyama-ken is a prefecture of Japan located in the Hokuriku region on the Honshu Island. Besides that, the Toyama Prefecture is the leading industrial prefecture on the Japan Sea coast, and has the industrial advantage of cheap electricity due to abundant water resources.
In the southeastern part of Toyama Prefecture, one of the tallest peaks of the Hida Mountains stands the Mount Tate. It is one of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains”. On the peak of the mountain lies Oyama Shrine, where climbers can receive a blessing and warm sake from a priest. There is a rest area where climbers may buy food, drinks and souvenirs along the way. On the Murodo Plateau is shopping area and ‘onsen’ bath. The ‘onsen’ on Tateyama is famously known for their use of sulfur spring water for the bath, leaving a noticeable aroma that can be detected even while ascending the mountain. Climbers may see Shomyo Falls (the tallest waterfall in Japan) across the valley while traveling along the main road from Tateyama Station to the Murodo Plateau on clear days.
Within Toyama City, stands the Toyama Castle also known as Azumi Castle. The castle and its surrounding land are maintained by the government of Japan as a public park. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt many times and in the year 1954, it has been rebuilt and renovated as Toyama Castle Park, and it is utilized as Toyama Local History Museum and Sato Memorial Museum, noted for its collection of utensils for Tea ceremony and antiques. The castle is also a well known place to relax.
Toyoma Prefecture also houses an important Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. The site is located in the Shogawa river valley stretching across the border of Gifu and Toyama Prefectures in northern Japan.
The village is well-known for their unique shape of their houses, the Gassho-zukuri, "prayer-hands construction" style, is characterized by a thatched and steeply slanting roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The designs are exceptionally strong and, in combination with the unique properties of the thatching, allow the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snowfalls in winter. The houses are large, with three to four stories encompassed between the low eaves, and intended, historically, to house large extended families and a highly-efficient space for a variety of industries.
